This is the entrance to the Assateague Lighthouse on Assateague Island, VA. It lies on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, however it does not receive any government funds whatsoever for upkeep. The flaking paint that you see around the door exists all over the 142-foot tall structure. It was last painted in 1995, but as you can see, it didn't hold up too well. A recent renovation, all funded by donations, refurbished the spiral staircase and observation deck so that the lighthouse can entertain climbers. Current donations and fees charged for climbing it are going toward further rehabbing, including a much needed paint job. I do enjoy it's grungy look (it's good for photography), but I hope to see it bright and shiny again someday soon!

Shot during a photowalk in downtown Pittsburgh with fellow HDR photographer Dave DiCello. Strange how you never see things like this when you live there, but when you return after moving you see so much beauty in your old town.

Here's a little urban-ex in Chi-Town. I thought 'skeletons' of these elevated train tracks were a treat for HDR photography. The textures and lines draw me in and the steel and iron work are just phenomenal.

This was one of those 'right place at the right time' lucky shots. Following dinner, I noticed that a thick cloud shelf had drifted in but there was still some blue sky showing under it. I wasn't sure what to expect with the sunset, but I figured there would be some pretty interesting and unique reflections from the water and the clouds as the sun came down below them. As I was set up and shooting away, a commercial fishing vessel came cruising in across the bay and I was able to snap a few frames of it against the setting sun. Sometimes a photographer's best friend is a little luck!

Here's another shot from my sunrise shoot in Assateague, VA. A few moments before the sun came up over the ocean, the sky took a beautiful pastel hue. My parents and I snapped away with our cameras and I really enjoyed this moment with them. Just above the narrow strip of silhouetted beach is the ocean. This body of water is a tidal wetland that is home to many birds.

This was shot near Wildlife Loop on Assateague Island, Virginia. The area was greener and more lush than I remember it being any time in the past ten years (or more) this year, and that's great to see!

My mom, dad and I all headed over to the island at 5am to shoot the sunrise. I had planned on doing it anyway, but it was great to have the company. This was shot after the sun broke over the horizon. I shot the first part of the sunrise near the beach. Those photos will find their way here in the next few days for sure.

During a recent trip home to Pittsburgh to see family and friends, I took an evening photowalk with Dave DiCello and was able to see some parts of the city that I had neglected in the past. This location, the rotunda at the Amtrak station was very impressive. The rotunda, and historical landmark, is actually connected to the former Pennsylvania Railroad facility which I believe is now an upscale apartment complex. The Amtrak station structure is connected to the building.

Everything I loved about Colorado in one shot; the red Earth, vegetation, mountains and clear blue sky.

The view from the top of Pikes Peak. I didn't have a lot of time, but I was able to snap a couple of brackets while I was up there. When they say the air is thin, they aren't kidding! I was skeptical but got a bit dizzy and light headed at 14,110 feet!

This was shot and processed as a color HDR image. Converted to black & white thanks to inspiration from Ansel Adams' images of the American West.

The Cog Railway comes to a dead end at the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Up there, it feels as if you can reach out and grab a handful of clouds. High elevation thunder storms were blowing in on this day though and we had to head down the mountain before the lightning arrived.

In DC, from the little bridge on Ohio Drive near the George Mason Memorial, you get a great view across the Tidal Basin complete with some awesome reflections as the sun sets opposite of the memorials. Most obvious in this scene is the Washington Monument (left) and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (right). But the huge building you see in the middle is the Bureau of Engraving--also known as "the money factory."
