A 199 second exposure of incoming storm clouds on the New Bern, NC waterfront.

New Bern, NC

Walking along the New Bern Grand Marina, you usually see a few bikes belonging to the owners of boats docked there. It's a pretty quick ride to anywhere downtown from your boat and back.

...wet feet is exactly what I got while shooting this frame. I am also pretty sure this is the wave that filled all the movable parts of my tripod with sand and saltwater too. But it was all worth it!

I was lucky enough to catch an interesting cloud formation at sunset in New Bern, NC. (2-13-12)

These ‘cliffs’ actually stand five or six feet high in parts and are a product of beach erosion on Emerald Isle. I have seen a few other local photographers sharing images of the beach’s condition in the past few weeks and thought I should head out and see it for myself. It’s certainly a different look for the beaches of this area!

Composing this shot also reminded me of some of the best photo advice I was ever given- 'get low, change your perspective, think of a creative point of view.' I could have easily shot this standing up, tripod fully extended and back away from the water. It likely would have been a nice shot too. But, by getting down low, thinking of a unique point of view and getting a little wet, I was able to get a much more impactful shot.

As the sun was setting to my right, the clouds blowing in across the ocean took on a calming and beautiful purple-ish pink hue. This is the kind of scene that you just pull up a chair and watch, it's good for the soul.

After a chilly, cloudy and wet day, the sun set below the clouds and briefly bathed downtown New Bern with wonderful, warm light.

On a sunny fall afternoon, I ventured out to a local swamp to shoot the foliage that surrounds the muck. I love how the green, orange and blue colors play off of each other in this.

With the sun setting to the right of me, I set up toward the clouds over the ocean that were reflecting the purples, pinks and orange hues of the sunset back down on the water. I love sunsets like this because the clouds almost give the scene a high-def feel and you can really see the layers in them thanks to the diffused light reflecting off of them, bouncing up off the water and all around within them. Pastel sunsets almost get a leg-up in my book, over blazing colorful ones. Almost...

After a long dark cloudy day, the rain finally came down in the evening. The rain storm, however, was short lived. Almost as soon as it started, it stopped. What happened next was one of the strangest and amazing displays of cloud and sunset that I've witnessed.
